Understanding Draw Weight — How to Choose the Right Poundage for Your Recurve Bow in 2026

What Is Draw Weight?

Draw weight is the amount of force — measured in pounds (lbs) — that you need to pull the bowstring back to your anchor point. A bow marked as 30 lbs requires 30 pounds of pulling force to reach a standard 28-inch draw length. The higher the draw weight, the more power and speed the arrow gets.

Choosing the right draw weight is one of the most important decisions a new archer makes. Too heavy too soon and you will develop compensating movements, strain your muscles, and form habits that take months to correct.

Why Too Much Draw Weight Is a Problem

This is the most common mistake Indian beginners make. Pulling a bow that is too heavy causes:

  • You cannot draw smoothly — the draw becomes a struggle rather than a controlled movement
  • You lose back muscle engagement and start pulling with your arm — leading to inconsistent shots and shoulder injury over time
  • Your aim breaks down before you reach full draw
  • Your release becomes a sudden letting-go rather than a clean, controlled movement

Simple test: If you cannot draw your bow, hold it at full draw for 10 seconds, and release cleanly without shaking — it is too heavy for you right now.

Draw Weight Recommendations by Archer Type

Archer Type Recommended Draw Weight Notes
Child (under 12) 10–16 lbs Start very light. Technique first.
Youth (12–16 years) 16–22 lbs Build gradually over 6–12 months
Adult Beginner (Female) 18–24 lbs Comfortable draw for first 6 months
Adult Beginner (Male) 24–28 lbs Resist the urge to go heavier
Intermediate (6–18 months) 28–34 lbs After technique is solid
Club / State Competition 34–40 lbs For 50m and 70m outdoor distances
National / Elite 40–46 lbs Only after years of structured training

Draw Weight for Indian Competition Distances

  • 18 metres indoor: 24–30 lbs is sufficient for accurate indoor shooting
  • 30 metres outdoor: 28–34 lbs gives good arrow speed and a flat enough trajectory
  • 50 metres outdoor: 34–40 lbs is the practical minimum for consistent 50m shooting
  • 70 metres outdoor (Olympic distance): 38–46 lbs — the range used by most of India's elite recurve archers in competition

How to Build Draw Weight Gradually

  1. Start at a weight where you can shoot 60 arrows in a session without fatigue or form breakdown
  2. Shoot at that weight for at least 3 months before considering an increase
  3. Increase by 2 lbs at a time — never jump 6 or 8 lbs in one step
  4. At every new weight, do blank bale shooting first — technique, not accuracy
  5. If your form deteriorates at the new weight, drop back immediately

A Note on Draw Length

Draw weight is measured at a standard 28-inch draw length. If your draw length is longer — say 30 inches — your actual draw weight will be higher than the number marked on the limbs (roughly 2 lbs more per inch beyond 28). This is why getting your draw length measured correctly by a coach is an important part of setting up your bow.
