How to Tune Your Recurve Bow for Better Accuracy — India 2026

What Is Bow Tuning?

Bow tuning means adjusting all the moving parts of your bow so that the arrow leaves cleanly, flies straight, and hits where you are aiming consistently. A bow that is out of tune will give you poor arrow groupings even when your technique is good — which is frustrating and confusing. With the right tools and this guide, most Indian archers can tune their own recurve bow at home or at the range.

Step 1 — Set the Correct Brace Height

Brace height is the distance from the deepest part of the grip to the string. Most recurve bows specify 7 to 9 inches. Use the Beiter Limbs Line Gauge (₹628) to measure accurately every time you string your bow. Adjust by adding twists to raise brace height, or removing twists to lower it.

Step 2 — Check Tiller

Tiller is the difference in bend between the top and bottom limbs. For most fingers-under-the-nock styles, the top measurement should be 3 to 6mm greater than the bottom. Adjust using your riser's tiller bolts:

Step 3 — Set the Centre Shot (Arrow Alignment)

Look down the arrow from behind — for right-handed archers, it should point very slightly to the left of the string. This compensates for the flex of the arrow on release, known as the archer's paradox. Adjust by moving the Shibuya Magnetic Ultima Arrow Rest (₹3,500) inward or outward.

Step 4 — Set the Button (Plunger) Pressure

The button sits in the side of the riser and absorbs the sideways push of the arrow during the shot. The Beiter Button 5/6 inch (₹9,000) is one of the finest plunger buttons in the world — used by Olympic and World Championship archers, with precise repeatable spring tension adjustment.

  • Too soft: arrow flies left (for right-handed archers)
  • Too stiff: arrow flies right
  • Correct: arrows fly straight and group tightly

Start with medium tension and use paper tuning to fine-tune from there.

Step 5 — Check Your Nocking Point Height

Start with the nocking point 1cm above square (90 degrees to the string) and adjust based on paper tuning results. Use the Easton Nock Tool Super (₹2,044 for 25 pieces) to install and adjust nocking points cleanly and precisely.
